There was no shortage of surprises in 2021. While the year started off with strong optimism around vaccines and economies re-opening, it soon became apparent that new variants were emerging just as fast as vaccinations could be carried out. We also saw huge strains on supply chains and levels of inflation unseen in a generation. On top of all this, we saw a surge in energy prices towards the end of the year. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities launched a crackdown on technology firms, rattling markets.
