Strictly speaking, ESG research is about analysing and estimating the financial, environmental, social and governance risks to companies' financial results and values. Risks that are the result and the effect of their operations, products and services on their stakeholders. By stakeholders, I mean their employees, suppliers, clients, communities and the environment. However, in recent years, the concept has expanded to include research of the risks that these same companies are posing to the wellbeing of their stakeholders and to the environment like, for example, climate risk.

As part of our stewardship role and as responsible investors of our clients' assets, engagement is the dialogue or interaction with economic actors to extract information or to attempt to influence behaviour. These actors can be corporations, governments, other financial industry participants, or other stakeholders.

As shareholders, we have the right to vote at the annual general meetings of the companies that we invest in, and proxy voting is really the process of casting that vote.
