About this talk

Companies are seeing a growing need to engage with not only major asset managers but also individual shareholders. The number of engaged retail investors has exploded over the last couple of years – sparked in part by offers from commission-free trading platforms and individual shareholders seeing opportunities following the market crash of 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic, campaigns for progress on diversity, equity and inclusion and the growing awareness of the severity and immediacy of the climate crisis have also caused investors both institutional and retail to ramp up pressure on companies to address ESG-related issues. In addition, many companies are considering the role of stakeholder capitalism, potentially bringing greater influence to other groups they affect, such as employees or local communities. As a result, governance and investor relations teams need to be giving serious thought to how their companies engage with retail investors and others they have not traditionally worked with. ABOUT GOVERNANCE INTELLIGENCE Governance Intelligence was founded in 2002 to help corporate secretaries and other governance professionals develop a deeper understanding of their roles and become more effective in them at a time when publicly listed companies’ regulatory compliance requirements began to escalate amid a series of high-profile corporate accounting scandals. Governance Intelligence is a digital content and events company, providing a forum where governance experts and service providers can share their experience, insights and best practice recommendations on a wide range of critical issues, from corruption, internal investigations, e-discovery and records management to succession planning, executive compensation, proxy actions and shareholder engagement. Governance Intelligence is independently owned and today continues to serve a vital role in highlighting the achievements and expertise of a group of people who work outside the spotlight and are often isolated as the only individuals in their organizations focusing on these complex matters.
