The Object Management Group® (OMG®) is an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium. Founded in 1989, OMG standards are driven by vendors, end-users, academic institutions, and government agencies.

The Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard is a powerful connectivity middleware for mission critical systems. In addition to large distributed systems, it is also used to manage communication in resource-constrained environments with battery-based, intermittent connections.

This webinar will discuss the DDS standard used with tiny devices. The DDS XRCE Protocol specification manages communication in eXtremely Resource Constrained Environments (XRCEs) between a micro device (client) and an Agent (the server). It enables the device to communicate with a DDS network – regardless of vendor implementation - and publish and subscribe to topics in a DDS domain via an intermediate service.

 

The DDS specification targets real-time systems, and it is designed to produce lightweight middleware implementations. As a result, DDS implementations targeting embedded systems are very common. Participants will learn when to use an embedded DDS implementation and when to opt for the DDS-XRCE standard.

SBOM 201: Consuming and Enriching Complex SBOMs

Object Management Group (OMG) modeling language standards include the Unified Modeling Language (UML), the Systems Modeling Language (SysML), the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN), the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF), and many more. Underlying all these specifications is the foundational Meta Object Facility (MOF) standard, first adopted by OMG in 1997 along with UML 1. Since that first version, MOF has evolved with UML up to the current versions of MOF 2.5.1 and UML 2.5.1.

The long-awaited second version of SysML, adopted by OMG in 2023, is also built on MOF. However, unlike previous versions of SysML, SysML 2.0 is not based on UML. Instead, it is based on a new Kernel Modeling Language (KerML), which adds important foundational capabilities for specifying the formal semantics of modeling languages.

And now there is discussion of also defining a new UML 3.0 that is also based on KerML. But MOF is itself based on UML, so would UML 3.0 also necessitate MOF 3.0? How can OMG maintain the stability of its current, well-tested modeling-language foundation, while continuing to promote technical innovation for the next generation of modeling languages?

The Past, Present and Future of the DDS Standard

In this webinar, you will learn how to use the Cloud Working Group discussion paper on “Domain Taxonomies for Data Governance,” issued by OMG in December 2023, to identify, inventory, tag and manage sensitive information stored in the cloud. The “domains” of the title refer to personal data protection, export controls, classified or defense information, and intellectual property. The paper also presents some of the mechanisms and tools that can be used to secure such information, and a scheme to attach classification labels to each dataset.

Domain Taxonomies for Data Governance

One of the fundamental concepts in the DDS technology is the use of data type information to make data exchange robust, efficient, and feature-rich.  The X-Types specification provides a rich toolset for defining data types for use in DDS systems.  This includes how data types are defined, how they may evolve, how they are exchanged between DDS participants at run-time, and rules for data type assignability.

In this episode of the DDS Foundation's 20th anniversary webinar series, we will explore the Extensible and Dynamic Types for DDS (or "X-Types") specification and learn how this very important component of the DDS standards impacts the design, function and interoperability of DDS systems.

Exploring DDS X-Types

We have been developing software for well over half a century. Throughout that time, people have proposed practices and methods that promise high performance for teams that choose them. Yet, beyond the few case studies accompanying the advertising and the hype, we don’t seem to see the promised results.  
This inevitably leads to new and better methods that promise to address the failings of their predecessors. But they don’t. They also have their shortcomings, and beyond the few case studies accompanying the new hype, they fail to bring the promised results to teams that adopt them. 

The answer is not to create new and better methods and frameworks. Instead, we must look into why methods fail to deliver what they promise and overcome those problems. That’s what Ivar Jacobson set out to do and what led to Essence being adopted as an OMG Standard ten years ago.  

In those ten years, we have seen a growing number of experts and methodologists use Essence to describe their frameworks and practices, and an increasing number of teams and organizations adopt Essence. 

This talk will explore some of the use cases of Essence and the value it can provide to various stakeholders, including the methodologist, the team, and the organization. We will share some success stories and look to the future by describing some of the changes proposed for Essence 2.0 and the drivers behind them. We will also explain why Essence is designed for a world of living and breathing AI.

Essence – The Standard Bearer for High-Performing Teams

Cybersecurity is critical in developing and running complex, distributed systems.  As systems become more interconnected and intelligent, protecting data against cyberattacks and unauthorized participants becomes increasingly challenging. The first step to securing a distributed system is to protect its data.  

As a publish/subscribe protocol, DDS helps ensure that only authorized users and nodes can transmit and receive data, providing zero-trust, end-to-end data protection and data-origin authentication. 

The DDS Security specification defines the security model and Service Plugin Interface (SPI) architecture for DDS-compliant implementations. This enables out-of-the-box security between compliant DDS applications. Specifically, the use of SPIs allows DDS users to customize the authentication, access control, encryption, message authentication, digital signing, logging and data tagging.

The OMG will release an updated version of the DDS Security specification later this year. Last updated in 2018, the updated version includes new cryptographic algorithms, key rotation, support for dynamic revocation of credentials and hardness against DoS attacks. This webinar will provide an overview of the DDS Security spec with an emphasis on the new features. The presentation will be followed by audience Q&A.

What’s New in the DDS Security Standard

Developers of systems running Data Distribution Service (DDS) use Quality of Service (QoS) policies to configure the behavior of the service.  For example, a user can declare that a DataWriter and DataReader are reliable, which obligates the service to deliver each and every sample from the DataWriter to the DataReader.  QoS separates the concerns of "what" (reliable data transfer) from "how" (resends, acknowledgments, etc.).
