Strictly speaking, ESG research is about analysing and estimating the financial, environmental, social and governance risks to companies' financial results and values. Risks that are the result and the effect of their operations, products and services on their stakeholders. By stakeholders, I mean their employees, suppliers, clients, communities and the environment. However, in recent years, the concept has expanded to include research of the risks that these same companies are posing to the wellbeing of their stakeholders and to the environment like, for example, climate risk.

As shareholders, we have the right to vote at the annual general meetings of the companies that we invest in, and proxy voting is really the process of casting that vote. We consider voting to be an integral part of our stewardship process and it links back into our engagement in ESG research activities and into the views of our investment teams and ultimately it provides us with a powerful opportunity to influence the companies we invest in.
